National Concert Hall
- Vilnius

2019
Competition

Developed for a competition promoted by the Architects Association of Lithuania, the new Vilnius Concert Hall emerges like a modern Parthenon, the new Vilnius Concert Hall emerges as a new monumental architecture atop Tauras Hill, its series of columns recalling the Doric colonnade of the ancient Greek temple.

The form is inspired by the Lithuanian Kankles, a trapezoidal zither of hollowed out wood, the columns recalling the strings of the instrument and the roof openings representative of the sound holes. It seemed fitting that such a prestigious concert hall should pay tribute to an instrument that is such an important part of Lithuanian culture.

Starting from the idea of a perfect square, the layout adapts to the building line by introducing one concaved side which further mimics the trapezoidal shape of the Kankles.
