Conceptual Design
Developed for an international design competition, the project for the new premises of the Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Panama (MAC) is expressed through a distinct and radical architectural statement, where the museum volumes are raised to free up the ground floor and transform it into a large and shaded public square.
In this way, the building becomes a civic infrastructure open to the city, integrating public space and culture and establishing a strong connection to the urban and climatic context of Panama.
Through the clear separation of public, logistic and curatorial circulation, the exhibition spaces within the suspended structure are organized so as to be efficient and flexible, providing long-term functionality.
Great emphasis is placed on environmental sustainability through the use of passive design strategies of natural ventilation, solar shading and diffused top lighting, all integrated within a high-performance double skin envelope.
The choice of materials is guided by durability, low maintenance requirements and environmental efficiency, where the exposed concrete structure, highly reflecting surfaces and aluminium screening systems contribute to improving thermal comfort and energy efficiency.
